Science and technology are the backbones of modern security. However, to stay ahead of emerging threats, the world needs a diversity of thought that only a truly inclusive scientific community can provide. In celebration of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, the NATO Science & Technology Organization (STO) has officially launched the third annual Women and Girls in Science (WGS) Challenge.
If you are a young woman in STEM looking to make a real-world impact on global security, this is your platform.
The 2026 Theme: Resilience Through Foresight
This year’s challenge asks participants to look beyond the horizon. Instead of focusing on current technologies, the WGS26 Challenge introduces an innovative "foresight approach." Participants are invited to submit research proposals (up to 1,300 words) that address one of five fictional "A Day Without..." scenarios:
- A Day Without Space: Losing access to communication and navigation satellites.
- A Day Without Power: Managing widespread energy disruptions and cascading effects.
- A Day Without the Internet: Navigating a world of prolonged digital disconnection.
- A Day Without Antibiotics: Confronting a future where common infections cannot be treated.
- A Day Without Boots on the Ground: Ensuring security in extreme environments where physical military presence is impossible.
- These scenarios are designed to test the resilience of our modern world and require bold, creative, and analytical solutions.
